Are braces for me?

It's important to have regular checkups (ideally once every six months) with your dentist to ensure your teeth are in good health. At these checkups your dentist may identify a problem which requires orthodontic treatment. If this is the case, your dentist can refer you to us.

However, at Pure Orthodontics we can also treat patients who come to us directly. If you have any of the following problems, or would like to find out whether you could benefit from orthodontic treatment, book a free appointment with us and we can discuss your options with you.

Types of orthodontic problems

The most common types of orthodontic problems are:

Crowding

Crowding

This occurs when there is not enough space in your mouth for all of your teeth and they end up fighting for space, usually overlapping each other.

Spacing

Spacing

The opposite of crowding, this problem occurs when there are big gaps between your teeth. This can lead to cavities and gingivitis (gum disease) as food can get stuck between your teeth and plaque can build up.

Overbite

Overbite

When you bring your teeth together by biting on the back, your front top teeth should sit over your front bottom teeth ever so slightly. This is the ideal 'bite' position. If your top front teeth sit out too far, this is known as an overbite and can be corrected with orthodontic treatment.

Underbite

Underbite

The opposite of an overbite, if your lower front teeth sit out past your front top teeth, this is known as an underbite and is the result of your lower jaw protruding too far out.

Openbite

Openbite

Another common bite problem is when your front teeth don't meet. All of these bite problems can affect the way you chew food, which in turn, can have implications on how your body digests it.
