How do braces work?

Traditional metal braces are made up of three parts: small brackets, archwires and elastic bands, also known as ligatures. Each plays an important role during treatment to move your teeth into position.

At Pure Orthodontics, we use clear braces, also known as Damon braces, and hidden braces, also known as lingual braces. Here’s how they work.

How do Damon braces work?

The Damon system uses small brackets and archwires to straighten your teeth. The difference between Damon braces and traditional metal braces is in the brackets. Damon brackets are self-ligating which means they have a mechanism that closes around the archwire to keep it in position. This is why you don’t need elastic bands if you’re wearing Damon braces.

How do lingual braces work?

When we fit your lingual braces we'll begin by bonding the small brackets to the back surface of your teeth. Once each tooth has a bracket on it, we'll connect them with a thin archwire. Throughout the course of treatment, this wire will be adjusted and tightened as this is what provides the pressure that is used to guide your teeth into position.
